Spice up your summer

BOUNTIFUL SUMMERTIME

I ABSOLUTLY LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!

I have to admit I wait all year for summertime. The green trees, the warm sun, hanging out with friends and family. Oh yah, and all the fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.

I am a big fan of eating what's in season, so summertime has a lot to offer. Fresh local produce in the supermarkets, local farms and farmers markets. All look so inviting.

Of course, you can always try your hand at growing some of your own. I have been growing an herb garden for the last few years and it's wonderful to have fresh herbs at my fingertips all summer and then dry and store them for the winter months.

They don't take up much space, a small patch of earth outside or a few pots in a windowsill.

Fresh herbs can add so much flavor to your food and offer so many health benefits as well.

Oregano- As far as herbs go Oregano is a heavy hitter. It is full of vitamins and minerals, boosts your immune system and rich in antioxidants.

Tyme- Boost your immune system and help fight off bacterial infections and acne. Tyme has also known to boost mood.

Sage- Is an antioxidant powerhouse. it's full of nutrients and is anti-inflammatory. Sage is also known for brain health and improving memory.

Rosemary- Used to improve blood circulation, brain health and treat indigestion.

These are just four of the more common and easy to grow herbs that are full of nutrients and flavor.

A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

I am a big proponent of buying organic when you can. I know buying organic can be expensive so focusing on the "dirty dozen" is a good place to start.

The EWG puts out a list of the Dirty Dozen every year. The twelve fruits or vegetables that tested for the highest pesticide contamination.

Committing to buying these items organic is a great start to improving your health.

Dirty Dozen 2025

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Leafy greens (Kale, Collard & Mustard greens)
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Bell Peppers
  8. Cherries
  9. Peaches
  10. Pears
  11. Celery
  12. Tomatoes

Buy Local

Buying local is usually better. You can find local organic growers in your area or farmers markets. But local doesn't automatically mean organic. Even small family-owned farms and markets can be spraying crops with pesticides and herbicides like Roundup.

Be informed and ask

Always wash first

The best way to wash your produce is soaking your veggies and firm fruits in a solution of baking soda and water. about 1tsp baking soda to 16oz water and soak for at least 10 min. For softer fruit like berries use a solution of vinegar and water.

Put dry fruit (make sure it's completely dry) in glass storage containers for longer shelf life and easy meal prep.

Healthy food is not boring

Tip: Michigan Heirlooms is an organic family-owned local farm in Highland. They have wonderful herbs and vegetables, go check them out. 209 E Wardlow Rd. Highland MI

We almost lost Max

Meet Max, This is Max, he is almost thirteen years old and an absolute sweetheart. I just wanted to share with you what we have been going through with him for the last several weeks. Max developed a bump on his head, not very big but I noticed it. After a couple days it got bigger and opened into a sore. Over the next week it just kept getting bigger, so I took him to the veterinarian to get checked out. There was no obvious infection, like pus or fever, but our vet decided to start a round...

Issue #1 CAN IT HEAL? This is the question my mom just asked me. I was a bit surprised and confused at first, I guess I assumed that I have said "the body's ability to heal itself is remarkable" many times. I truly believe that, and I have seen evidence of it many times. She was speaking particularly about Diverticulitis. She has struggled with digestive issues for many years. So, when she was diagnosed with diverticulitis years ago, it was no surprise to her. She tried to stick with the...
