Our mental health is of the utmost importance. How we interact with the world and how we feel about ourselves depends on our mental health. Way too many of us are trying to navigate through life feeling like we don't have control over our emotions, feeling like we can't show up the way we want to. It keeps us from engaging in our lives.

Maybe it's not you, maybe it's a loved one. I know how hard it is to watch someone you love trying to navigate through the day with anxiety and depression. It's terrible to watch their pain and not know how to help. Is there someone close to you that is struggling?

Anxiety has become so common that 1/3 of school age children are now diagnosed with it.

The common approach is medications or therapy.

Anxiety almost always comes with digestive and stomach problems, stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss and more, you physically feel terrible. We think that when we get our thoughts and emotions under control that the digestive issues will go away so we approach it with a "mind first" approach. Going to therapy and maybe medications to help with chemical imbalances. I'm not saying this approach doesn't work. For some people it works just fine.

But if that approach doesn't work for you, I want to tell you that there is a different way.

The gut brain connection is a strong and continuous loop.

Many of the chemicals in your body that are needed for good emotional health are made from the nutrients that you are eating as well as the health and ability of your gut to turn them into the neurotransmitters that you need for good emotional health.

Therefore, it stands to reason that approaching your anxiety with a gut first approach will be successful. Afterall you can get control of your thoughts but if your body is still struggling to make the happy chemicals you need, it will be an uphill battle to feel better.

I know it sounds like I'm talking hypothetical, but it is actually based in science.

  • Getting your gut healthy so it will be able to produce the chemicals that you need like serotonin.
  • Balancing the stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline (fight or flight)
  • Producing Melatonin for good sleep
  • Addressing nutritional deficiencies that your body needs to be balanced and healthy.

And we can't forget about detoxing. It's so important that our body is able to detox as well as possible. We have toxins that we come in contact with most every day. It's important that your body is able to detox affectively. If your body needs some help with detox (most of us do) it has a negative effect on your health.
