This is the question my mom just asked me. I was a bit surprised and confused at first, I guess I assumed that I have said "the body's ability to heal itself is remarkable" many times. I truly believe that, and I have seen evidence of it many times.
She was speaking particularly about Diverticulitis. She has struggled with digestive issues for many years. So, when she was diagnosed with diverticulitis years ago, it was no surprise to her. She tried to stick with the general guidelines set by the doctor, foods to avoid. But still she suffered.
When I was in the process of becoming certified as a health coach we started talking seriously about her digestive health. She started to understand what her body needed and what it could not tolerate. We worked on making adjustments and changes that have greatly improved her digestive health but most importantly she is free of the everyday pain and discomfort she was in.
That is why I was so surprised when she asked me if it could heal. I think it has already done so much healing. Then I started to think about where that question came from.
Getting a diagnosis has so many implications. In some way you may feel relieved that you better understand what is going on. Getting a diagnosis may also give you a sense of absolution, it's not your fault, or it was out of your control.
However, we often think of a diagnosis as an irreversible condition. Combine that with the thought that it's out of our control and we can be left thinking that there is nothing we can do to change it.
That is such a sad statement to me.
To take responsibility is to take your power back. It's not about blame; it doesn't really matter how you got here. The important thing is that you know that you have the power to change the situation, no matter what it is.
A diagnosis is just a name given to a set of circumstances your body is experiencing in this moment.
Don't get stuck in the diagnosis. The body can improve and heal if given the right circumstances.
You have seen evidence of the body healing on the outside many times cuts, bruises, broken bones. We all know of terrible cases where the body has healed. This is true on the inside as well.
True healing takes time and changes. It's not a quick fix. It's not a pill to mask the symptoms. Its working on yourself for yourself and I can help you get there.
A coach can help you to understand what is happening in your body and learn how to get in touch with what your body needs to get stronger. Coaching can be your support, your person to help you when you are confused or when you feel like maybe being healthy is just not in the cards for you. Having someone in your corner who understands that its hard, it's a journey with ups and downs but believes in you 100%.
That is what a coach does.
When the circumstances change so will the diagnosis.
Stop giving your power away to this idea that disease just happens, out of the blue or at random and you have no control. Or worse, that there is nothing you can do to fix it, you can only manage it with medication for the rest of your life.
I have seen people able to get off their medications, reverse their diabetes, live without symptoms of acid reflux or IBS.
This is what I do, as a health coach, I help you better understand what your body needs and work on helping you take back your power to be in the best health you can be.
